I had this amazing idea of posting new blog for each and everyday I get to spend here. Well look at me now on the 7th day… barely making it.
Just came from a lecture I gave at the Tsinghua University in Hsinchu, where a classroom filled with students was listening to me talking about Balkan music, with main focus on EX-Yugoslavian countries. And at the end of the lecture they were even able to clap along some odd meteres while I was soloing over their rhythmical support.
I am always amazed how different our music cultures are and I get the privilege to present the area and the influences that are making me into a musician that I am.
Now I am attending the soundcheck of an amazing world music band based in Taiwan called Bazar.
Go ahead and check them out!
Ok. professionalism on the side… Let me show you some of the material I was using while giving the lecture. :p
This accordeon player explains in a nutshell how you would play Jingle bells in:
Croatian – no special ornaments or anything just plain and simple.
Bosnian – emotional
Serbian – Everything turns to kolo, their hands are just waiting under the armpits so they can get an excuse to dance. :p
Montenegrians – Drama all over, the most dramatic Jingle bells you will ever hear.
Macedonians – they just love to play, jolly as it gets.
Slovenian – joy on steroids
After giving the lecture the best part was when we got to order Mc’donalds in Chinese. It seemed to an untrained ear (me) that Evy got angry at the person ‘’inside’’ the order machine. (Check my instagram stories for more deets on this one. :P)
Why the posts came so late? I was struggling with some technicalities, since it is the first time I’m putting my blogs online through my webpage. Hopefully to make it more accessible and eternal. //from my mouth to gods ears//
Over here, at this moment Klara is just doing some yoga pose where she is standing on one leg and balancing the shit out of herself.
A necessity on tours for me: keeping our backs healthy with regular stretches.
Quick check before my focus goes to shizzle again…
We established ourselves in our new Airbnb. At first sight it seemed like such a cute place and clean. It was smelling really nice. Then in the night we started to see some rough edges. As the night came and the lights went out, things started to crawl around. Still not sure if it was in the flat or in the walls. Anyway to distract us we played rain soundtracks on repeat in order to fall asleep. Did work for Klara, but I was awake til 6AM.
Our place has 2 floors its quite cheap and in the center of Taipei!! So bugs on the side it is quite a good deal! The bottom floor is the kitchen and bathroom (with a powersocket hanging dangerously close to the shower area) 😛 Gonna throw in a photo later on.
The living space bit further from kitchen with a balcony and the most important the washing machine where I felt so special to use my domestic godess skills and wash my dirty clothes. Up the stairs small floor with bed.
Btw… next night totally solved the crawling sounds with earplugs. (highly recommended)
For now as we are waiting for the photo of the power socket in danger zone of the shower, enjoy this photo of power sockets in constant shock around the whole of TW.
Later that day I had a photoshooting with an amazing photographer from Taipei and we did some portrait photoshooting. Since modeling is not at the top of my job list I recieved some help from my beloved fiance who gave me tips how to wrok my angles.
Well lets be short and clear, we went to the north to the mountains by the ocean. The scenery is mind blowingly beautiful we were invited to have lunch there where I will have. concert in another cooperation with the local tea masters.
Later we took a trip to the famous nearby village where I saw a dog with the longest nails ever, drank amazing tea, enjoyed the view of the ocean and got a stamp that spells my name in Chinese.
I slept like 3 hours and then rock n roll. On our way to Tainan, dropp off the bags and check the Tea House I will perform in today. We will blend the flavours with my music. I am really looking forward to this one. I even got a taste of a special tea that they will prepare today. The tea culture here is serious matter guys. And the lady asked me what do I think of the tea. But besides me noticing that it is nice and warm because I was too tired to notice any other fragrances of sensations, like flavour for example. After checkup me and Evy (my booker) went on the train again and a 1/2 hour journey to Kaohsiung where I will have a guitar workshop. I hope there is enough guitarists so they wont notice if I fall asleep. :p
As I write this I am enjoying my coffe which is the thing that will keep me going.
So in order to cope with the jetlag my idea was as suggested by my friend that I last a whole day without sleep. I have to say that now (8.3.) I woke up quite fresh. Lets see how the day goes. :p
But through the day my head was a couple of times cought in a free fall towards a table or something. And my mind was somewhere between Alpha Centauri and the center of the universe.
The trip was quite decent I was of course a bit nervous for the travel and for the tour.
- Did I pack all the necessary things.
- Do I have a sufficient ammount of underwear, socks etc.
Only time will tell. :p
And considering that a washing machine is a commodity used by almost every person in the developed country I find this now also less relevant.
Eventhough I packed as much as I am planing to shizz my pants twice per day. (stolen from one meme I saw once) Still makes me giggle.
As said things went relatively smooth and I was enjoying the service of Cathay Pacific and being amazed by the Baggage dropoff service they provide in Amsterdam-Schipol airport. Amazing. It looks like something from a sci-fi movie. Check my stories on Instagram for more deets on that one.
And as I found out while touching down that one of my videos that I recorded recently, which is a cover of one TW track that happens to be a theme from a game, that happens to be a horror game got picked up. And I was able to gain thousands of views in a couple of days which would usually take me with my own songs years to get. (thats just how it is :p)
During the night I woke up a couple of times thinking that there are some cockroaches around, because of the incident me and Klara had last year. But appart from that slept like a baby for 4 hours.
For now I have a slightly sore shoulder and a smile on my face and I am so very freaking much looking forward to tonights show in Taipei! OMG!
For the rest of the day I was sleeping. Evy my nanny took care of me by bringing me Japanese herbal medicine because I felt a bit sick. 🙂
Then we went to a concert and the place was full! Waw! First set I felt a bit insecure about my sound and how everything is equalized, but then I just let go of everything. And when I just play, nothing really matters anymore.
Tomorrow got to wake up at 6:30 to catch the fast train to Madker.
As I was writing sketches on how to write my first day down, the battery got dead. And being a bit paranoid about if I will burn the computer by plugging it to a 120V socket I decided to go to bed and figure it out the next day. Regardless of the consiquence I just shoved the adaptor to the extension.
VERY IMPORTANT if you go to one of these countries think about how you will provide food for all your electr. gadgets. I even brought a power splitter, 5 holes just to be sure everything can be plugged in including my toaster…. just kidding I didn’t bring no such thing.
